This Video Summarizes Why I Started CornerstoneDad

I’ve never met this brother.

I’d like to though.

In 4-minutes, he broke down a struggle that I had known for many, many years.

What he said was not very profound, for it is a story that many of us know so too well.

But it is profound, because he put it together in a poetic way, unleashing the pain, sadness, desire and compassion that only a father on the outside can feel.

Prentice Powell, keep spreading your message man, because brothers like us see every Father’s Day in a unique way.

We also know that our metric of a good father is not defined by our son’s mother, our friends, or the judge in a courtroom, but by that person we see in the mirror. That’s what makes us fight.

Joshua Chapter One

Now God is saying, “Look keep the law, don’t deviate from it, for it is by this observing it day and night, meditating in it, thus thou shalt make thy way prosperous, thus you will have good success.”

As we turn to the first Psalm, we read, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law does he meditate both day and night, he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth fruit in his season, his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper”(Psalm 1:1-3). People looking for prosperity, people who are looking for success, God has given you the rules. Meditate in it, observe it, and thus shalt thou make thy way prosperous, for these are the rules to prosperity. These are the rules to success. So the conditions upon which he can know the power, the presence, the victory.

CornerstoneDad Bible Family Reading Podcast #7 – Proverbs 1

Proverbs Chapter 1

The title in the Hebrew Bible is “The Proverbs of Solomon“ (1:1), as also in the Greek Septuagint (LXX). Proverbs pulls together the most important 513 of the over 3,000 proverbs pondered by Solomon (1 Kin. 4:32Eccl. 12:9), along with some proverbs of others whom Solomon likely influenced. The word “proverb” means “to be like,” thus Proverbs is a book of comparisons between common, concrete images and life’s most profound truths. Proverbs are simple, moral statements (or illustrations) that highlight and teach fundamental realities about life. Solomon sought God’s wisdom (2 Chr. 1:8–12) and offered “pithy sayings” designed to make men contemplate 1) the fear of God and 2) living by His wisdom (1:7; 9:10). The sum of this wisdom is personified in the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 1:30).

“TITLE. This Psalm may be regarded as THE PREFACE PSALM, having in it a notification of the contents of the entire Book. It is the psalmists’s desire to teach us the way to blessedness, and to warn us of the sure destruction of sinners. This, then, is the matter of the first Psalm, which may be looked upon, in some respects, as the text upon which the whole of the Psalms make up a divine sermon.

DIVISION. This Psalm consists of two parts: in the first (from verse 1 to the end of the 3rd) David sets out wherein the felicity and blessedness of a godly man consisteth, what his exercises are, and what blessings he shall receive from the Lord. In the second part (from verse 4 to the end) he contrasts the state and character of the ungodly, reveals the future, and describes, in telling language, his ultimate doom.”

Here We Go Again…Racist Pastor Rails Against ‘Colored People’ and Biracial Babies

wbc and kkk

I applauded the letter written HERE by a “white” pastor calling for other “white” Christians to speak out for justice as he asked,

Where is your conscience?  Where is the little light you promised to shine for Christ?  You have put it beneath a bushel and suffocated it.”

So what will you do about those INSIDE the church speaking as this pastor is from the pulpit?

Sermons are often interrupted to discuss Phil Roberson and his statements about homosexuality and defending his right of speech. Sermons are often interrupted to discuss politics, as though God is a Democrat or Republican. But in my 30+ years of being in various churches, I’ve NEVER heard a “white” pastor call out racism in his own community/church body.

Never.

…and I’m not talking about the, “…and we must love everybody because God loves us whether we’re black, yellow, red, blue, we’re all brothers and sisters in Christ!”

I don’t know any red, blue or whatever color invades your mind at that time.

I’m waiting on someone to go-in the same way this guy did with his congregation, and as you see, he had no shortage of “AMEN!s” either.

Perhaps that’s why it’s not done in most pulpits today, because they might be worried if they did speak out against racism, AMENs might be hard to come by in a majority “white” congregation.

Some say that Satan’s biggest trick on mankind today is making people think he doesn’t exist.

Maybe racist are pulling the same thing on most congregations today.

I hate to inform many of you with this news, but even with “black” members in your congregation, most are still thinking about how your church feels about racial issues. They don’t forget just because they smile and say “Praise the Lord” when they shake the usher’s hand at the door.

If the Church as a whole, continues its silence and not speak out against the racism in the ranks with the same amount of fervor that it does with so many other (sometimes trivial) issues, “black” Christians will continue to wonder whether they are a brother in Christ, or a brother to the Klan like this guy.

Send A Kid To Gym Class and You Build Him For A Day; Dad, Teach Him the Deadlift and Build Him For A Lifetime

Cool Pappa's avatarOLD DAD STRENGTH

Deadlift on SmithMachine

The road to more athleticism, muscle and aging currency is paved with the deadlift. I’m taking  great pleasure in teaching my son the lift while he’s still young and establishing a solid base of strength. Of course I say, “taking”, because this will be an ongoing process as it may take many months for him to learn how to deadlift and squat properly. However, he’ll carry the knowledge and coordination for the rest of this life instead of the injuries like I do from being young and dumb (okay, I was 27 but young in experience).

That said, today was the first time in my life I think of had someone to record me performing an exercise, so I was able to critique my own form during Rack Deadlifts. While I still think my form could be a bit tighter, I’m glad to see my back stayed rigid. In a…

CSD Cruising Down Memory Lane In My: 1987 Regal Grand National GNX vs. Chevrolet Callaway Corvette

GNX vs CVette

We’ve been getting pretty heavy around here lately so now it’s time to post some fun stuff.

We’re going to call this segment, “Cruising Down Memory Lane In My” and if you have some memories cruising and driving the rides featured, please let us know below in the comments section.

First up, the two cars that are responsible for the horsepower wars that we see today, the Buick Regal GN GNX and the Chevy Calloway Vette. Yes, I think the Fox Mustang was mostly responsible for really making performance relative again in the auto industry. However, these two cars brought the BEAST back into the industry for sure.

However, in stock trim, basic stats show why these were definitely the dark ages for ole Vette. Despite its weight advantage, it was getting spanked by a menacing-looking family car!

Yep, even a Buick exists in our family! This one is owned by my brother.

CornerstoneDad Bible Family Reading Podcast #4: 1 Thessalonians 1

Today, Big Homie leads us today with a reading of Paul’s letter to the church in Thessalonica.

To listen, CLICK HERE!

Did you know:

Purpose & Background

Church established by Paul; Paul forced to leave quickly

Some Thessalonians questioning Paul’s credentials.  Others worried about dying before Jesus returns.

…fierce persecution arose and the believers smuggled Paul out of the city in the night.  Because Paul left abruptly and without having spent much time among them, he had never finished teaching the basic matters of Christianity, and the church’s foundations were not complete and solid.  Several strange problems had grown up after his premature departure.  Apparently, some individuals in Thessalonica opposed this new religion by accusing Paul of being a money-grubbing self-promoter.  As soon as circumstances became difficult, they said, he snuck out of town.  There were also doctrinal difficulties.  Chiefly, The Thessalonians worried that if a Christian died before Christ returned, he or she would be lost forever.  So Paul sent Timothy to find out how the Thessalonian church was doing – if they still held to the word they’d heard from him.  Timothy has returned with a good report, and so Paul writes this letter around 51 AD to defend his ministry among them, clarify basic doctrine about death and the Second Coming, and reassure the Thessalonians with hope.

A “White” Pastor Writes – DEAR WHITE CHRISTIANS OF FLORIDA: AN OPEN LETTER

michael-dunn-jordan-davis-large570

While Christians may agree or disagree on the so called, “Stand-Your-Ground” law, I want to encourage you to head on over to the website of Riverside Baptist Church and read, “DEAR WHITE CHRISTIANS OF FLORIDA: AN OPEN LETTER“. Here’s an excerpt:

“Here is my premise and I dare you to prove me wrong:  if white Christians in Florida stood up and cried out for justice, demanding an end to the license-to-kill-stand-your-ground law, it would be rescinded immediately.  Where is your conscience?  Where is the little light you promised to shine for Christ?  You have put it beneath a bushel and suffocated it.  You know as well as anyone that teen-agers should not be killed for playing loud music.  But then, we all know don’t we, that Jordan Davis was not killed for playing loud music. He was killed for being an uppity black kid who dared to smart off to a drunken white man with a concealed weapon’s permit.”

I think it is about time, that our fellow “white” brothers and sisters in Christ stand up for obvious injustice, just as they did during the Civil Rights era.

Why?

Because opinions on the murders like we have seen in Florida with Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis continue to be split along racial lines as we argue everything but the obvious, that a young teenager did not deserve to die regardless of his skin-color, because they looked suspicious or because they would not turn down their music.

Can we even agree that skin color played a role? Seems to me that we cannot even do that.

Do all Christians agree on gun control? Of course not, but since the Republican party is viewed as being synonymous with being a Christian (which it is NOT), the party has been allowed to be the “pro-gun” party. Yet, while many darker-skinned people may associate themselves with the Democratic party because of civil rights issues, they also tend to side with the Republican party on this issue in order in a desire to be armed to protect themselves from crime in their own communities as well as the from members of the dominant society (e.g. KKK).

So this leads to the point, that had the roles been reversed, we have decades of proof showing that the gun laws in Florida would be currently up for debate as our justice system would not allow the killing of someone in the dominant-society by the minority group in this society. We would also have a narrative in the media that would spark a national outrage. For example, lets remember that the right to bear arms in California certainly changed with the Black Panther party (and for a further look at this issue, may I strongly encourage the reading of this article titled, The Racist Roots of Gun Control.)

Overall, it is refreshing to hear a pastor from the dominant society speak out. As a darker-skinned Brother-in-Christ, my voice often goes unheard because my lighter-skinned brothers and sisters tend to remain silent or defend what seems to be obvious with the “Yes, but…”.

Sometimes there is no, “Yes but…”.

Everyone loves to love Martin Luther King, so many would do well to remember his words from, “Letter From Birmingham Jail”:

“I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a “more convenient season.” Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.”

…and more importantly, the words from the Word of God in Proverbs which says,

Proverbs 29:27

An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, but one whose way is straight is an abomination to the wicked.

Proverbs 17:15

He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the Lord.

CSD Thought Of The Day: Is Experience The Best Teacher?

the-best-teacher-is-experience-and-not-through-someones-distorted

The statement that “experience is the best teacher” is quite common.

However, what does the Bible say about one of the most popular proverbs in our modern-day culture?

Many times young people and adults alike will feel that unless a parent has done “x”, they do not understand and cannot offer fair and just discipline because they cannot relate.

So if you never slept around when you were younger, how can you say anything to them about sex?

If you never had any alcohol, how can you say they should not drink?

If you never smoked anything, how can you say they should leave the “weed” alone?

The list can go on-and-on, but the comment, “You just don’t understand because you never did it” is applied to many issues.

I’m studying Proverbs in my own personal study right now and if you’re a parent facing that same argument today, perhaps you can be helped by this nugget that jumped out to me from the NET Bible Study, UNDERSTANDING GOD’S WISDOM – The Book of Proverbs:

At creation God set two ways before man. He gave man a choice between developing his

“soul” powers by eating of the “tree of knowledge of good and evil,” or developing his “spirit”
power by eating of the “tree of life.” You know how Adam and Eve choose!

Today, man has the same choice, he can develop his “soul-power” . . . [that is, his
intellect, his emotions, and his volition powers] . . . or, he can develop his “spirit-power” – by
feeding upon, and assimilating, the principles of God’s Word – principles which are found in the
book of Proverbs!

The principles found in the book of Proverbs enables one to discern between good and
evil by the discerning of the spirit . . . and not by experiences. Learning “good and evil” by
experience was never the learning method God intended for man. God original intention for man
was never to know evil “by experience,” but, rather, he was to learn of good and evil only by the
discerning of his “spirit.” This was the test God put man too in the very beginning. Learning
“good and evil” by means of one’s spirit-power in order to make proper judgments is what the
book of Proverbs is all about!”
