Setting Records and Clankin’ Steel – Great Way To End January’s Strength Phase

I’m still working out, but follow the progress and workouts over at:

Cool Pappa's avatarOLD DAD STRENGTH

It’s actually beginning to happen. The Large Professor is beginning to get noticed by the veterans in the gym and they are giving him props for putting in the work.  Strength-wise, he is progressing very well as his workouts are very similar to mine with about the same number of sets. This means that his body is allowed to adjust and learn how to handle increasingly heavier loads set-after-set.

Now handling increasingly heavier loads is exactly what I’ve been able to do this phase. I finished with PRs on every day over the last week and felt great. The extra upper-body day has allowed my lower back to be fresh on squat and deadlift days which means more fresh days are being stored in the tank.

Overall, out of the 31 days in January, I did some lifting or treadmill (oh how I hate that thing) 27 days. That’s how I…

CornerstoneDad Bible Family Reading Podcast #1: Genesis 1

Family Bible On The TableDid you ever think about how your life would change if you had no vision? I’m not talking about vision as in psychological direction. I’m talking about physical vision.

This is a reality that my mother is facing as numerous eye surgeries are slowly taking away her once eagle-eye sight. This morning on the way to church, we were listening to a podcast where a guy was describing a bible-reading dramatization that he had created. The thought then came to me (or should I say the Lord gave me the thought?) to make something like this for my parents, as the day may come when my parents may not be able to read scripture on their own. Surely the bible is available in many different forms today, but why not make something personal just for them?

So today, with no delay, is the first recording. None will be perfect I’m sure, but I want to get this project started. It took J. Vernon McGee at least five years to go through the bible, but what he has done has lived and bless us long after his death and that is what we set out to accomplish. At first, this was just going to be something personal that I was doing only for my parents, but what about others who may just want to hear the word in their ears and not buy a product? So I’m sharing our project on CornerstoneDad.com as well.

I’m not sure how long it will take to get through the bible, but I hope that whenever we conclude, that my folks are here to enjoy over and over again.

May God show us grace, as we are speakers and hearers of His word.

CSD What’s In The Driveway Review: Lexus LS 460 F-Sport AWD

Front Fascia

A brother like me is yet to ever live in a house with a garage, but every now and then I at least get to drive some pretty nice and honestly, not so nice cars. Perhaps you’re considering one of the models for you and your family and I hope to help give you a few things to think about when you hit the dealership.

First up: Lexus LS 460 F-Sport AWD

Left Exterior

Competition: Mercedes-Benz S-CLASS S550; BMW 7 Series 750i xDrive Sedan; Audi A8 4.0T Sedan L quattro Tiptronic

Price: MSRP Including Delivery  Charges: $85,945

Engine: 4.6L V8

Transmission: 8-speed AT

Horsepower at RPM: 360@6400

Torque @ RPM: 347@4100

EPA Fuel Economy Ratings (city/highway/combined): 16/23/18mpg

Loved:

  • Interior room big enough to fit 2-3 of your teenage boys in the back seat
  • Sound system that is so good, those boys will be glad they are riding with dad
  • Smooth ride that is adjustable at the turn of a dial

F-Sport

Liked:

  • Car is “sneaky-fast”, so it’s scooting pretty well big feels slower because of it’s size
  • Vehicle that’s understated enough not to draw too much attention yet the front grill still lets people know you’re in an expensive Lexus if you want to flaunt like the 1980’s.
  • Almost impossible to be uncomfortable in seats that go every which way and are heated and ventilated. Also, the 2nd row is heated and adjustable as well!

Dislikes:

  • The wheels aren’t bad, but I’d prefer a better look nor would I want to clean them at my local coin car wash
  • While quick, I thought the F-Sport name came with more neck-snapping power instead of parking lot scrubbing ground-effects.

“Look in the driveway rating” (1: Tow it please – 10: I look out the window just to see how beautiful it is):

  • 7: It’s a Lexus, so it’s understated but it looks pretty good in F-Sport trim

Overall rating, is it a/an

  • “I Need An Econ-o-Ride?”
  • “Dad’s Driving What He Has To Drive During The Kid Years”
  • “‘Mid-Life Crisis’-mobile”
  • “Dad Has Hit His Stride”?

Needless-to-say, the Lexus LS 460 F-Sport gets the “Dad Has Hit His Stride” rating. At its price-point, Dave Ramsey would not approve of a dad driving this on credit and to pay cash, you certainly have to be strong in your money-making years and have a retirement account with plenty of zeros showing in your balance.

We’ll see how it stacks up against more competition in 2014!

CSD StrongDad Program: Jan. 1, ’14 – Get The New Year Started Right With New Gym PRs!

LiftingMyselfStrength

Sam’s Lesson: Working Out Doesn’t Stop Damage To The Body, But May Help Withstand Against More Damage To The Body

Sam didn’t tell me his age straight away, but told me that he had a heart attack in the gym. I could tell a bit by his speech, but this guy was pretty ripped to be “older”, and he said that he had been training for 40 years and used to compete in bodybuilding contests. Then, when he told me he was 70 years old, my mouth dropped! First, because he didn’t look that old. Second, here was a guy that had a heart attack in the gym, lost 88 lbs., and still comes in to get his workout on. I think the lesson from Sam is simple. Working out may not keep heart attacks from happening, strokes from happening, diabetes from coming, etc., because our body’s get old and are not designed to live forever. But working out will help you bounce back after suffering injuries, illness or medical trauma. I’ve experienced this on a lessor scale as I never missed a planned workout after breaking my hand and wearing a cast for six months. Four years later, my left arm is only one rep weaker than my right, and people gave me props on the gym for still coming, cast and all, day after day. Then here’s Sam, a guy that was determined to not let something that has already changed his life, take more of his life away from him.

It’s a New Year, and today many are hitting the gym for the first time in months. After a couple of weeks, if they didn’t drop out because they are so “busy”, many will drop out because they will begin having joint pain from either improper form, doing too much too soon, or maybe just because their body is getting older and can’t do as much as they thought.

That’s NO EXCUSE. If anything, it should make you want to go back and be even more determined, but wiser. Look at your kids. Aren’t they worth the “rehab”? If your knee, back, shoulder hurts, don’t you want to be able to run or throw the ball with them or your grandkids? If you were an athlete and we’re being paid an easy million to come back after a major surgery, you know you would do it. So how much is playing with them worth?

Sadly, and from what I’m seeing more as I get older, somebody’s going to get the exercise in. It’ll either be you now, or your kids/grandkids pushing you in a wheelchair.

If Sam didn’t stop because of a heart attack, you and I really have no excuse. So be determined that if you are working out again to start the New Year, that nothing will get in your way. NOTHING!

Now Happy New Year to me as I set new PRs for Rack Pulls and Hammer Lat Rows!

2013 CSD Fantasy Football Winner Is… Father_N_TwoBoys!

Final Fantasy UpdateLombardi.Trophy.closeup

In the end, there is always one winner. But in this fantasy football season, there were almost two. With the season ending last week, some were not happy about their place in the standings, while others are very happy about where they stood. If there is one way a championship should end, I want it to be a close one. That’s what happened last week with a match-up that was almost close enough to set a record. Here is what Yahoo had to say about it.

Father_N_TwoBoys got 18.30 points from Demaryius Thomas and 16.00 from the St. Louis Rams Defense, stealing one from BaldHeadSlicks 99.94 – 98.48. The playoff win was notable, with the 1.46-point margin of victory being the third-smallest recorded in the league this season. Father_N_TwoBoys has been coming up strong regularly and has now won four straight. Father_N_TwoBoys wins their second matchup with BaldHeadSlicks in as many games, and their head-to-head record improves to 3-1. BaldHeadSlicks concluded the regular season in second place with a record of 9-5. With a scoring average of 119.62, they also placed second in the league in that metric. This season, BaldHeadSlicks had the league’s best average scoring margin, defeating opponents by 30.81 points per game.

Playing for third place was FluffyKittens and william’s team. That game was not as notable, as FluffyKittens came out on top 152.00125.28.

The fight for fifth place was even less notable, as The Best Team tried to beat Cool Cats. The Best Team celebrated victory when the owner won 137.6483.32.

Congratulations to Father_N_TwoBoys for taking the trophy (P.S. there’s no trophy), and may you have more success in your fantasy football career.

To everyone else, thanks for playing and thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed this season.

CSD StrongDad Program: Dec. 26, ’13 – Lessons From A Gym Guy Named Sam

I appear as an extremely anti-social guy when I’m in the gym. I simply hate for my workout to be interrupted because some dude wants to talk about football or tell me about his life. I usually put my headphones on and keep my head down even avoiding eye-contact with people as I don’t want them to even think that I’m there to socialize.

But every now-and-then, I’m glad I get interrupted, because the real me can come out.

This day, I was interrupted by an older guy named Sam. I’m going to throw a few nuggets of wisdom Sam through at me in about 15 minutes of conversation.

First, Sam got my attention to tell me that he was very impressed with Rack Deadlift weight. I felt really good and appreciated that compliment and after hearing more of Sam’s story, I appreciated that statement even more! Lillpappa and my uncle put in the me desire to always take the time to soak of the knowledge of older people. When they die, that wisdom dies with them. What a pleasure it is when they stop to teach and tell me things and they don’t even know me.

So if I can encourage you today, over the next month, find your “Sam”. Find that older person that plants seeds in your life and then they walk away. They leave it up to you to water it and bear fruit in the future.

CSD Christmas Memories From Lillpappa

disappointment-demotivational-poster

This year was one of the roughest Christmas’s financially that we’ve honestly had in quite a while. But then again, does it really matter as I said in my last post here?

My kids didn’t get sheltered this year, and have received the same speech my job gives me every year. My job basically says, “You’ve performed great this year…but do to circumstances beyond our control like the economy, higher insurance costs, customers who aren’t increasing their orders…this is all we can do.”

So as my dad used to say, “Do you think the electric company, gas company, house note people tell me I don’t have to pay this month because it’s Christmas?”

Boy do I understand those words in a whole new way now. Perhaps more-so, because Lillpappa didn’t have Sallie Mae to throw in there as well!

However, Lillpappa would always try to get the three of us one “big” gift, and sometimes I could only imagine the looks on our faces when we unwrapped that gift.

This year I was again remembering one of the craziest gifts ever.

Let me set this one up.

This was around the time the Atari 2600 was jumping off the shelves. Kids in and out the ‘hood were getting this for a couple of Christmas’s and my brother, sister and I were expecting to finally get our family’s first video game system. So this Christmas was it, Black “Lillpappa” Santa was about to hook us up!

atari2600a

SIKE!

I can’t remember who opened it, but I just remember seeing that box and…what…what is THAT?

bally

It’s the Bally/Astrocade!
What is that you asked? Yea, we asked that as well…

It was the Bally Astrocade! To this day, I have NEVER met anyone who had one of these systems. Let me repeat that, NEVER!

Now my dad is good for cutting-against-the-grain, but this might have been his best one ever. I’m sure this game system was a lot more powerful than we thought, but because it wasn’t an Atari, it didn’t matter to us too much. Obviously somebody else in this world had one because there’s a website HERE devoted to this great game system. Plus, it even has a wiki page!

“On the front of the unit was a 24-key “hex-pad” keyboard used for selecting games and options. Most cartridges included two games, and when they were inserted the machine would reset and display a menu starting with the programs on the cartridge and then listing the four built-in programs. On the back were a number of ports, including connectors for power, the controllers, and an expansion port. One oddity was that the top rear of the unit was empty, and could be opened to store up to 15 cartridges. The system’s ability to be upgraded from a Videogame console to Personal computer along with its library of nearly 30 games in 1982 are some reasons that made it more versatile than its main competitors, and was listed by Jeff Rovin as one of the seven major video game suppliers.”

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bally_Astrocade

Now, if you know Lillpappa, any look of disappointment would have meant that the bad-boy was going back to get returned and all we would have had to play with for Christmas would have been the wrapping paper! But reflecting on it today, he probably knew. The Atari was going for around $200, and that was in the late ’70s, so it would have been an extremely expensive purchase. But my dad still came through with something on that day when he didn’t have to do so. He always reminded us that he gave us Christmas all year long and that was no lie. Whether it was the trips to California, the Hot Wheels, baseball cards, GI Joes and dolls (the dolls were for my sister just so you all understand). We lacked nothing as we lived on his sole income in our household. Sure, I wanted whatever was hot at that time, (later it would be an Intellivision and Colecovision), but lacked nothing.

So, not only am I thankful for my Savior this holiday season, I’m thankful for the sacrifices made by the real Santa Claus, the one that worked 16-hours shifts, drove some beat-up cars, paid for our private school, etc.. He did all of this when the lights, gas, insurance, mortgage company and so on still wanted their money by Christmas.

Thanks Dad. The older I get, the more I appreciate the sacrifices, and days like today amplify it even more for me.

Thank you Lord, for providing him a job, us a house, and plenty of food. I was a fat kid growing up so I certainly never missed a meal.

So as you open presents this morning, I leave you with a couple of jams that played in the background every year and a playlist that I put on every year with my family as well (sorry, no Bing Crosby in our house):

Merry Christmas From CornerstoneDad!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Do you remember why we celebrate Christmas?

Dad’s do your kids really know what Christmas is about?

It is to remember and give thanks for God the Son, coming to earth in the flesh, and being willing to die a humiliating criminal’s death on a cross for a humanity whose sin condemned us all to eternal punishment.

It’s not about gifts.

It’s not about Santa Claus.

It’s not about money.

It’s about a divine rescue plan that was put in order from Genesis 3:15:

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

This is known as the “protoevangelium”. Gotquestions.org says,

“Genesis 3:15 is known as the protoevangelium — the first gospel. The verse introduces two elements previously unknown in the Garden of Eden, elements which are the basis of Christianity—the curse on mankind because of Adam’s sin and God’s provision for a Savior from sin who would take the curse upon Himself.

This is Christmas! He was born TO die!

Romans 5:7-8 says,

“For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

That’s how we get to John 3:16:

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

The “He gave” is Christmas!

The “He gave” is also Resurrection Sunday that we celebrate in April. So this is just the beginning.

But notice the “whoever believes in Him” portion of the verse? It is those who do not perish, but have everlasting life. The gospel never says everyone will believe in Jesus Christ and enter into eternal life. Revelation 20:11-15 says,

“Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”

If you’re reading this and thinking that your good works will get you into heaven or a better afterlife, this judgements for you! Do you ever think that your sin against a holy God can ever be atoned for by you? Even just the absurdity of that “plan” shows the pride deep in your heart. Let me put it this way, if someone murders your child and they are only 20-years old, should we let them out of prison or even give them probation because before and after, they seemed to be pretty upright people? No, I’m sure you’d say they still need to be punished for what they have done.

Without Jesus Christ as your substitute, you will be punished as well.

He came to earth to die for YOU!

Now what will you do with that gift?

Will you toss it aside like your kids will do with many of their gifts after a couple of weeks?

Or will you repent for offended God with your sins and trust Him to save and deliver you from this day forward?

Remember, Santa’s not the one who’s going to find out who’s naughty or nice.

Hebrews 4:12-13: For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

Psalms 33: 13-15: 13The LORD looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men; 14From His dwelling place He looks out On all the inhabitants of the earth, 15He who fashions the hearts of them all, He who understands all their works.…

While Phil Robertson’s comments concerning the LGBT community have been the talk in Christian circles, I have been perplexed at the lack of discussion concerning his remarks about African-Americans.

To me, this is the equivalent as someone walking up to a married couple and saying, “You’re car is piece of junk and your wife is fat and ugly!” Then the husband exclaims, “Don’t you call my car a piece of junk!”

Then the wife looks at him and says, “Wait, is that all you have to say? I thought you love me, but you never defend me when someone insults ME!”
